7th Annual Spartan Dash, April 28

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will be hosting its seventh annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 28, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should signs up to participate in the event with a “family team.” Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the 1-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.

Solon jazz takes two top spots

SOLON– Last year, the Solon High School Vocal Jazz department made history having three of its groups selected for the state championships.
The program topped that accomplishment this year, making history all over again.
In the March 27 state jazz championship at Valley High School in West Des Moines, the top two places went to Solon High School. It was the first accomplishment of its kind for the competition in the state of Iowa.

Official farmers market in the works

Council, parks and rec discuss public, private locations

SOLON– A new city-sponsored farmers market is in the works.
Details surrounding the program were discussed during a joint session of the Solon City Council and the Solon Parks and Recreation Commission April 4, although a location for the market is still up in the air.
The city previously allowed private vendors to set up in a portion of Mushroom Park seasonally, but has not provided direct supervision.

More than ghost troubles

Walkin'

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, our move in 2005 to our current home in Iowa City was supernatural in another way: Sabra was phenomenal in getting every last detail accomplished.

A little nostalgia goes a long way

Food For Thought

Indulge me for a few minutes; yesterday was my birthday and, after this many years, everybody is entitled to a little wallow in the past once in a while. I spent a good deal of the day writing birthday cards for a number of my friends who are also April babies. At our age, receiving cards on or before the exact birth date is immaterial. The big thing is just to have people remember we are still around and able to read and comprehend.

Spring football wrap 2018

Hawk Talk

This is the final segment of a three-part series about spring football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
This week, I’ll look at the quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs and special teams.
Nate Stanley has a chance to be one of the really good quarterbacks to play at Iowa. I’m not going to say great quarterback until he has two good seasons in a row.
First, look at his size. Stanley came to Iowa listed at 6-4, 212-pounds. In the spring football guide, he is up to 242-pounds.
That is a big dude playing quarterback.

Creek Girls and Lady Spartans run in Solon

Solon’s Troyer, Smith and Bullard win in hastily composed track meet

North Liberty Leader
SOLON– A timeworn cliché holds that when one door closes, another opens. Well, for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls track and field team, Mother Nature closed (slammed, actually) the door on a home meet (set for Friday, April 6). However, the Solon Lady Spartans sprang into action and threw together a meet for Thursday, April 5, in Solon, thus beating the weather and providing track and field athletes a rare for-this-season opportunity to compete.
