IC West swimming wins

Trojans soak Tigers 89-80 and 125-34, over C. Falls

CEDAR FALLS– Iowa City West High’s boys’ swim team opened the 2017-18 season with a pair of wins over the Cedar Falls Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Holmes Junior High in Cedar Falls. The Trojan varsity pulled out an 89-80 win, while the junior varsity (JV) dunked Cedar Falls, 125-34.

IOWA CITY– Dubuque Hempstead’s Mustangs galloped into the gym at Iowa City West High Thursday, Dec. 7, and rode home with a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) dual meet win over the Trojans. Hempstead took the varsity meet, 55-12, and the junior varsity (JV) meet, 84-0.
Nelson Brands (160 pounds) pinned Hempstead’s Trever Maiers in 2:00, Will Hoeft (195) took a 19-7 major decision (MD) from Dubuque’s Steven Blosch and Graham Gambrall (138) won a 7-4 decision over the Mustangs’ Tyler Murphy.

Liberty girls fall 71-17, boys fall 61-55 in overtime

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s basketball teams met the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) Saturday, Dec. 9, with sophomore/junior varsity and varsity squads all in action on the home floor during a “gold out” event supporting those fighting cancer.
The varsity girls fell 71-17 to the third-ranked (Class 4A) Pointers in the first half of a varsity doubleheader.

Become an aquatics instructor

NORTH LIBERTY­—The North Liberty Aquatic Center is looking for a high energy, enthusiastic aqua instructor. The classes are Mondays from 8-8:45 a.m. and 9-9:45 a.m. with the flexibility to teach occasionally on Wednesdays and Fridays. Class instruction takes place in the deep end and shallow end of the pool. An instructor should have knowledge of equipment such as noodles, water weights and aqua belts and should know how to incorporate them into class.

Montessori infant and toddler school opens

NORTH LIBERTY– The Montessori infant and toddler school is open in North Liberty. An Open House Event is scheduled for Dec. 29 from 4-7 p.m. All are welcome to attend and light refreshments will be provided. The school is currently accepting new students and will begin classes on Jan. 3, 2018. The Montessori Children’s Nursery will be located at 70 Circle Dr., Ste. A, in North Liberty. The Montessori Children’s Nursery occupies the space next to the Montessori Children’s Garden which has provided authentic Montessori education to children in the community for 15 years.

TIFFIN– About four years ago, the City of Tiffin conducted a survey asking for residents’ feedback. Among the top of their requests? A grocery store.
It appears residents of Tiffin have finally had their wish come true, this holiday season, as plans for a Fareway grocery store have been announced in their own backyard.
“We have property under contract in the Prairie Village Commercial Development for approximately three acres on the northwest corner—contemplated to construct a store in middle of 2018,” announced Garrett Piklapp, Vice President, General Counsel at Fareway Stores Inc.

North Liberty dentist to run seven marathons in seven days in seven continents for charity

NORTH LIBERTY– Many of us like to devote some time and energy to a charity or cause near to our hearts. Others, well, they go the extra mile.
Deb Carneol D.D.S. of North Liberty Dental is doing just that. In January, she and a group of 15 other participants will take a charter plane across the globe for an epic endeavor known as the 777 World Marathon Challenge. In it, her team will represent a cause of their choice while completing seven marathons in seven continents in just seven days.

INDEPENDENCE– Powered by its veteran grapplers, Solon’s varsity wrestlers finished 10th at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Independence Dec. 1-2.
Senior Tyler Linderbaum won the tournament championship at 285 pounds, senior Zach Wegmann finished fifth at 220, and sophomore Zeb Gnida (120 pounds) and junior Mike Hoyle (182) each took sixth place.
Solon had two other wrestlers– juniors Aidan Dall (126 pounds, 10th) and Andy Brokaw (138 pounds, 10th) place in the top 10.

The Spartans posted comfortable victories over Dyersville Beckman and Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON– Solon’s varsity wrestlers picked up a pair of dual wins Dec. 7 in Mount Vernon.
The Spartans posted comfortable victories against Dyersville Beckman (53-21) and host Mount Vernon (51-16).
“Anytime you can get two conference wins on the same night is a good night,” Solon Head Coach Blake Williams said.
Aidan Dall (126 pounds), Andy Brokaw (138) and Jax Flynn (152) pinned their Beckman opponents, while Zeb Gnida (120) picked up a technical fall. Mike Hoyle (182) and Adam Bock (195) each won decisions for the Spartans.

Lady Spartans drop third in a row

This week wasn't kind

SOLON– Another week, another three games on the hardwood for the Solon girls’ basketball team, but this week wasn’t as kind as the last.
The Lady Spartans started the week on the road Tuesday, Dec. 5, falling behind early against Central Clinton, in DeWitt, being outscored the first two quarters, 11-8 and 12-3, but rallied in the third quarter outscoring the Sabers, 14-5, setting up a sprint to the finish that found Solon only able to match Central Clinton’s performance, 7-7. The Lady Spartans fell, 35-32, in a close, low-scoring affair.
