Jewell and Jackson - consensus All-Americans

Hawk Talk

Before the season started, Iowa had 23 consensus All-Americans.
Now it has 25.
To be a consensus All-American, you have to be on at least three All-American teams.
Josey Jewell and Josh Jackson were named on the Walter Camp, Associated Press, Sporting News, the AFCA and the FWAA All-American first team squads.
This is the fifth time in Hawkeye program history two Hawks earned consensus All-American in the same season.

Hawks take on instate battles

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men took down Drake Saturday at Des Moines and the women played at The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Sunday.
The men’s 90-64 win over the Drake Bulldogs last weekend was a little surprising.
The Bulldogs were coming off a tough loss at Minnesota, 68-67.
Drake led the Gophers at half 28-24, had a 29-4 advantage on bench points and made 12 3-pointers.
Against the Hawkeyes, Drake trailed at half 40-33 and made only nine threes.
The Bulldogs came into the game shooting 42 percent from behind the arc.

The Cribbage dilemma

Food For Thought

Believed to have been invented by the 17th-century English poet Sir John Suckling, Cribbage remains one of the most popular of all card games. A virtual playground for mental math, the game offers numerous ways to pile up impressive point totals from just five cards. A perfect hand totals 29 points, and that’s just the point count from the cards in one hand of play; there are several opportunities to score additional points during play by taking advantage of the cards played by your opponent, as well as the order in which cards are played.

One man, many voices

Ben Carling channels Dickens with ‘A Christmas Carol’

NORTH LIBERTY– On Dec. 3, 1867, the New York Daily Tribune ran a review of Charles Dickens’ first reading of “A Christmas Carol” in Boston’s Tremont Temple the prior evening:
From first to last there is no trickery in it,—full of action, abounding in gesture, with a voice for every character in every mood; with a face for every man, woman, and child, reflecting every feeling. There is no straining for stage effect, no attitudizing, no affectation. The most effective reading we ever listened to—it was the most beautifully simple, straightforward, hearty piece of painting from life.
