Trojans triumphant in Deac Ryan Relays

ELDRIDGE– Iowa City West High’s Trojan track and field team notched another meet championship Tuesday, April 3, after winning North Scott High School’s Deac Ryan Relays. The Trojans put up 157 team points for the win, besting Pleasant Valley (145) and Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) foes Cedar Rapids Prairie (81) and Dubuque Hempstead (79). Central DeWitt rounded out the top five teams with 52 points.

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Trojan track and field team won its home meet Saturday, April 8, with 115.5 points, besting Cedar Rapids Kennedy (79), Western Dubuque (71), Linn-Mar (66), Pleasant Valley (63), Johnston (61), Cedar Falls, (50), Davenport Central (23), Cedar Rapids Washington (17), Solon and Xavier (tied with 14 team points), Muscatine (10.5) and Cedar Rapids Xavier (5).

CCA’s Bormann hits milestone in 6-1 win over Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– It came as a shock. Hannah Bormann, who scored her 100th varsity career soccer goal Tuesday, April 4, at home against Vinton-Shellsburg, had no idea she was about to reach a benchmark.
“After my third (goal), Georgie (Schuerer) said, ‘One more!’ And I said, ‘What?’”

Liberty High staff keeps on growing

More coaches named to lead the Lightning

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School is growing again as Principal and interim Athletic Director Scott Kibby adds staff ahead of the school’s opening in August. Kibby announced three new coaching positions which included two familiar faces.
Jeff Gordon, who led the freshmen football team to a 6-4 record in its debut season, will head up the sophomore program when the Bolts (including many of the “Original” or “O-Bolts”) take to the gridiron this fall.

Spring Cleanup Day April 29

NORTH LIBERTY– Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 29, from 7-11:30 a.m. is for residents of North Liberty only. Please be prepared to verify that you are a North Liberty resident with a water bill stub or driver’s license. North Liberty residents pay 30¢ each month on their recycling bill for this service.
Miscellaneous large items are to be brought to the Public Works Facility, 620 Calvin St.
Assistance will be provided to the elderly or handicapped. Please call City Hall (319-626-5700) by April 27 to make arrangements.

Road work: Penn Street between Jones Blvd. and Cameron Way

NORTH LIBERTY– Work has begun to widen Penn Street to five lanes between Cameron Way and Jones Boulevard. Two lanes of traffic will remain open through the work site, however the speed limit and lane width will be reduced to allow crews to begin utility work and install storm sewers.
On Monday, April 17, the sidewalk on the south side of Penn Street will be closed as grading and utility work will begin on the south side of Penn Street. The sidewalk will be removed and then repaved once the south side of Penn Street is reconstructed. This sidewalk closure is expected to last through June.

Morning spring leaf pick-up through April 21

NORTH LIBERTY– Open burning of leaves and yard waste is not permitted in North Liberty. The City will pick up leaves that property owners have raked to the curb through April 21. Dependent on how many leaves are out curbside will determine the time it takes to make the pickups.

Two arrested in North Liberty after breaking into wrong home

NORTH LIBERTY– Police arrested two suspects for allegedly breaking into a North Liberty residence during the evening hours Tuesday, April 4.
According to the complaint, North Liberty police responded to a residence on Whipple Court around 7 p.m. after receiving a report from a homeowner that someone had entered a back window well. Officers determined that 18-year-old Sammy I. Hamed of Coralville was attempting to gain entry into the wrong residence. Reports state that 19-year-old Mohamed A. Elsemeih, a resident of Whipple Court in North Liberty, stood by as Hamed broke in.

NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty Blues & BBQ announced Veridian Credit Union will partner to present North Liberty’s annual premiere family event in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Along with the new partnership, organizers are excited to unveil the festival’s new logo.
“North Liberty Blues & BBQ has become an exciting summer tradition that brings our community together,” said Jennifer Roberts, a spokesperson for Veridian. “We’re grateful to the city, countless businesses and hundreds of volunteers that make this event possible, and we’re proud to be a partner in its success.”

North Liberty man calls in false robbery to evade police

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man allegedly called in a fake report in order to avoid being pulled over last week.
According to complaints, police observed a Ford Taurus being driven along Penn Street around 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, and recognized the driver as Bryce J. Wagehoft, who was barred from driving. In an attempt to divert the officer, Wagehoft then called 911 and reported an armed robbery in progress at a local convenience store. He even gave a description of a made-up suspect before hanging up, according to reports.
