Trojans kings at Kingston Stadium

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Trojans track and field team won seven events Tuesday, March 28, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s 58th annual John Ask Relays, and took the team championship with 170 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie was second with 101, followed by Bettendorf (88), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (72), Linn-Mar (61), Cedar Rapids Washington (60) and the host J-Hawks (36).

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls soccer team is in a position they’ve not been in before as the 2017 season looms ever larger on the horizon. Coach Matt Harding, in his fifth year with the Creek Girls, explained.
“We finally have depth at all positions, a luxury we haven’t had in the past,” Harding said.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy reigned supreme Saturday, April 1, at the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Relays held at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. West won the varsity meet with 102 points topping Decorah (72), Cedar Falls (66), Cedar Rapids Prairie (55), Linn-Mar (46), Solon (43), Waterloo East (42), the J-Hawks (40), City High (33), Dubuque Wahlert (30), Cedar Rapids Washington (24), Cedar Rapids Xavier (15), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (11) and Waverly-Shell Rock (10).

CEDAR RAPIDS– The unofficial start to the 2017 varsity boys soccer season came Thursday, March 30, with a jamboree, hosted by Cedar Rapids Washington, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Iowa City West joined Mount Vernon, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Iowa City High, Linn-Mar, Marion and the host Warriors in 40-minute exhibition matches.

Ducks Unlimited Banquet at South Slope April 7

NORTH LIBERTY– Greencastle Gunners invites the public to its Ducks Unlimited (DU) Banquet Friday, April 7, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center.
Tickets are available at http://www.ducks.org/iowa/events/44801/greencastle-gunners-du-dinner for $40 (single), $55 (couple), $25 (greenwing) $260 (sponsor), $275 (sponsor couple) and $320 (table captain). The table captain purchases a table of eight and is entered into a special drawing for an over/under shotgun.

TAKO Spring Shed and Scavenger Hunt rescheduled for April 8

NORTH LIBERTY– Hunt for that big rack you’ve been dreaming about on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with Take a Kid Outdoors (TAKO) at Creekside Commons Park in North Liberty. Lunch will be served at 11: 30 a.m., and participants are required to bring their own cutlery.
Be prepared to go on a short hike and possibly walk on some muddy trails to see spring birds, bugs and flowers. Advance registration for this free event is requested, but not required for groups of fewer than six.

Muddy Creek clean-up April 8

NORTH LIBERTY– In observance of Keep America Beautiful Day, Boy Scout Troop 216 and Cub Scout Packs 216 and 275, the North Liberty Tree & Storm Water Advisory Board and the North Liberty Parks Department will lead a cleanup day Saturday, April 8, to remove debris along Big Muddy Creek and the North Liberty Recreation Trail.
Public involvement, participation and education of storm water pollution prevention and management is the goal of this event.

Community garden registration open Friday, April 7

NORTH LIBERTY– Plots are available at North Liberty Meade Barn, east of Penn Meadows Park, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Each plot is 10-by-30 feet. A hydrant is available on site for water, but no hose hook-ups are allowed. Individuals need to bring buckets to transport water to their plots. Planting may begin May 1, earlier if plots are ready, and plots must be cleared by Nov. 1. Plots are assigned after registration, payment and completed lease agreement.

Road closure: North Liberty Road from Oak Lane to N. Juniper

NORTH LIBERTY– Beginning Monday, April 3, weather permitting, East Penn Street/North Liberty Road will be closed to traffic so crews can regrade the road bed for improved sight lines, improve the shoulder and prepare for future trail and sidewalk additions, and realign the road’s curve for improved safety. Work is expected to last through the fall.
Traffic on East Penn Street and North Liberty Road will be detoured to North Juniper and Dubuque streets, but residents along the construction will have access throughout the project.

Easter Egg Hunt April 8 at NLRC

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Optimist Club and the North Liberty Recreation Center (NLRC) co-sponsor the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which will take place this year Saturda, April 8, at 10:30 a.m. sharp at the NLRC. Candy is spread on the ground. If inclement weather, the event is moved inside. Don’t be late, the candy vanishes in minutes! This free event is for ages 10 and under.
