Wanted man arrested for armed robbery

Looted neighboring apartment with rifle in hand

A North Liberty man was arrested for the armed robbery of a neighboring apartment tenant. Already wanted for a previous felony, he now faces several charges.
Accord to police complaints, Beauhanan D. Walker Jr., 33, of Country Living Apartments, at 160 Sugar Creek Ln., knocked on the door of the neighboring apartment around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8. When the woman opened her door, Walker aimed a rifle at her head and entered the apartment.

Heritage Christian School holds annual Veterans Day Celebration

NORTH LIBERTY — Veterans Day was recognized Friday, Nov. 10 at the Heritage Christian School in North Liberty with their annual Veterans Day Celebration. School Head Michael Annis said the special event has two purposes. “The first is to honor those who have served in the United States military. The second is to provide an intentional experience for our students to recognize that the cost of freedom was purchased by individuals.”

Solon VB players earn WaMaC honors

MOUNT VERNON– Four Lady Spartan volleyball players have received all-conference honors.
The WaMaC Conference released its all-conference selections Oct. 19 for both East and West Division All-WaMaC Volleyball Teams.
Senior Grace Keith and junior Rachael Nelson were named to the Second Team, while juniors Taylor Moore and Abby Smith were named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Solon finished the season with a 3-4 conference record and a 15-20 record overall.
Maggie Willems, of Mount Vernon, was named Coach of the Year for the East Division.

Solon falls to Xavier at UNI-Dome, 35-7

CEDAR FALLS– The Spartans struggled little during the regular football season, but met their Goliath, falling 35-7 to Cedar Rapids Xavier in the Class 3A semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, on Thursday, Nov. 9.
“Xavier executed at a very high level on offense and had a great plan to attack our defense,” Solon Head Football Coach Kevin Miller said. “Our offense had to abandon our game plan prematurely due to the Xavier’s early success. We moved the ball but couldn’t finish inside the red zone when we needed to.”

Ely ribbon cutting marks opening of Hoover Trail extension

On Sunday, Oct. 15, representatives from the City of Ely and Linn County gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the recently completed 2-mile section of the bike trail that stretches along Ely Road from the City Hall to Seven Sisters Road.

Soup and Hoops

Winter Sports Kickoff Nov. 17

SOLON– Solon High School hosts its Soup & Hoops Winter Sports Kickoff Friday, Nov. 17, in the Solon High School commons and gymnasium.
Serving soup from 5-8 p.m. $6 per person or $20 per family.
The event will showcase and introduce Solon girls and boys basketball teams and wrestling team. Also at the event will be a silent auction featuring gift baskets just in time for the holiday shopping season, with proceeds funding equipment and team development.

Last Methodist football dinner Nov. 18

SOLON– A fixture in the community– Solon United Methodist Church “Football Dinners” on every home Saturday of the Hawkeyes’ regular football season– is coming to an end.
The Saturday, Nov. 18, home football Saturday for the Hawkeyes hosting Purdue will be the last, according to Tawnia Kakacek, co-chair of the program.
The church will be serving from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Take out orders are welcome. Call 624-2251.

Senior Conversations cancelled

SOLON– The Friday, Nov. 19, Senior Conversations at the Solon Public Library has been cancelled due to speaker scheduling conflicts. The December Conversation will be skipped and Senior Conversations will be scheduled again next year.

Limits to Solon fireworks

Proposed ordinance would eliminate New Year’s displays

SOLON– Residents of Solon will have four days a year to shoot off fireworks.
At a Wednesday, Nov. 1, meeting, members of the Solon City Council unanimously approved the third and final reading of an ordinance limiting private fireworks displays to July 1-4.
State legislation, signed into law in early May, approved the sale, purchase and use of fireworks across the state.
