CCA to host Dec. 11 fundraiser dinner to support local family

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School family of staff and students are coming together to raise money for Jane and Jeff Astor, longtime teacher and coaches at CCA.
On Dec. 11, CCA High School will host a pasta dinner fundraiser during the boys’ basketball game against Center Point Urbana. The evening will include a silent auction and dessert auction. The fundraiser will assist with the medical costs and travel expenses associated with Jeff’s medical treatments.

Free Thanksgiving dinner to be held at South Slope Nov. 26

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fourth year in a row, a free Thanksgiving dinner will be available to residents of North Liberty thanks to a local community member and several businesses.
On Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day, from 12-4 p.m., a full Thanksgiving meal will be available free of charge for residents of North Liberty at the South Slope Community Center in North Liberty.

NL council reviews budget goals for new fiscal year

NORTH LIBERTY– As the North Liberty City Council began to set budget goals for the upcoming fiscal year, one thing emerged as a top priority: engaging the community in planning the city’s future.
Dollar values are hard to assign to a goal like that, but seeking citizen input before proceeding with big-ticket items became part of the discussion several times during the council’s Nov. 17 budget goal setting work session.

Cities await information on proposed new interchange

North Liberty, Tiffin consider road upgrades as Iowa DOT plans interchange projects

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has much to work out with the cities of North Liberty and Tiffin.
DOT officials hosted an open house Wednesday, Nov. 18, in North Liberty to answer questions about a proposed new interchange at Interstate 380 and Forevergreen Road. About 100 people attended the meeting.

NORTH LIBERTY — He was 24 years old and holding a lead container filled with the ingredients of an atomic bomb.
Joe Segreti didn’t think anything of it at the time. It was just a part of his job.
Segreti, an Iowa City resident and patron of the North Liberty Community Library, said he was among the lucky ones in World War II.

SHS named a model Professional Learning Community at Work

SOLON– Solon High School was recently recognized by Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. The school’s successful implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work™ process was a contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students.
PLCs are schools and districts in which educators recognize the key to improved learning for students is on-going, job-embedded learning for the adults who serve those students. The three big ideas of a PLC call upon educators to:
1. Focus on learning.
2. Build a collaborative culture.

Solon facilities usage meeting to be held Dec. 9 at middle school

SOLON– The Facilities Usage Meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in room 403 at the Middle School. The meeting is being held to discuss the upcoming facilities needs for January to April. Please make sure your team, or group, has a representative present and bring your schedule. Ed Hadenfeldt named Cornell College Alumni Coach of the Year

MOUNT VERNON– Cornell College honored Ed Hadenfeldt of Solon as the 2015 Alumni Coach of the Year during an Oct. 3 ‘C’ Club Breakfast and Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Hadenfeldt, a member of Cornell’s All-Century Football Team, retired last spring after 37 years in coaching and education. He got his start at Sioux City Heelan High School as head wrestling and assistant football and track and field coach.

From Cyclone to Spartan

Lisa Bishop takes over as head hoops coach of the varsity Lady Spartans

SOLON– Normally, she would be a Cyclone in Hawkeye country, but now, Lisa Bishop is a Spartan.
Bishop, 33, has taken the reins of the Solon varsity girls basketball team, and prepared to open the 2015-2016 season Nov. 24 at Vinton-Shellsburg.
But it almost didn’t happen.
She was pregnant with her third child, Zeke (now 7 months old) when the position of head coach for the Lady Spartans was brought to her attention.
