Spartans score home conference win over Maquoketa, 3-0

Girls earn first win in three tries against CPU

SOLON– It was nip and tuck, but Solon’s varsity volleyball team took care of a pesky Maquoketa squad 3-0 at home Oct. 6.
The Spartans edged by the Cardinals, 25-22, 25-23, 27-25.
“We played good enough to win,” noted Solon Head Coach Jeff Walker. “The girls knew that and brought it up afterward, so they are seeing the level of their play and that they need to raise it.”

Solon wins district with 41-14 triumph over CPU

Spartans blow open game in second half

CENTER POINT– The Solon Spartan varsity football team captured the district championship with a 41-14 victory over the Center Point-Urbana (CPU) Stormin’ Pointers at Center Point on Friday night, Oct. 9.
The Stormin’ Pointers controlled the ball most of the first half, winning the time of possession game, but were unable to muster more than six points. The Solon offense scored only a touchdown in the first quarter, but revealed defensive stamina keeping CPU scoreless in the second quarter for a 7-6 halftime lead.

TROY MILLS– Twin wins– no, make that four– on Saturday sent Solon’s cross country teams into the postseason on a high note. In a battle of Class 3A leaders, No. 4 Solon’s boys edged No. 2 Marion 45-47 for the North Linn Invitational title Saturday, Oct. 10. Second-ranked (2A) Tipton was third, with sixth-ranked (2A) Williamsburg fourth.

Raiders and Creek Girls have a good night in the pool

FAIRFIELD– The Williamsburg Raiders had a good night in the pool Monday, Oct. 5, defeating Fairfield, Keokuk and Oskaloosa, in Fairfield.
The Raiders knocked off Fairfield, 112-46, Keokuk, 119-44, and Oskaloosa, 118-47.

Lightning claims title at Prairie Hawks VB invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High School’s varsity volleyball team ran the table with a 5-0 showing Saturday, Oct. 10, in Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Invitational tournament.
The Lightning defeated Johnston 2-0 (21-19, 21-9), Class 2A 14th-ranked West Branch 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) and the host Prairie Hawks 2-0 (21-7, 21-12). The Bolts also knocked off previously unbeaten Wilton, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, 2-1 (21-14, 23-25, 15-4), and Class 4A fifth-ranked Western Dubuque, 2-1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-9).

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) closed out the shortened football regular season at 4-3 overall, and 3-2 in Class 3A District 6 with a 31-24 loss to the Grinnell Tigers Friday, Oct. 9, at home on Senior Night.

Liberty boys win West’s late “Early Bird” XC meet

Decker and a “Bolt Pack” lead the Lightning to team title

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s “Trojan Early Bird Invitational” is usually held much sooner in the cross country season, but was postponed this year and finally took place closer to the end, on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Kickers Soccer Club Complex in Iowa City.

Creek Girls sweep Vikettes, 3-0

15 kills from Clubb lead CCA to win over Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team followed a Senior Night sweep of rival Williamsburg with a 3-0 sweep of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes, at home, on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Clippers won the first set, 25-15, took the second, 25-14, and held off a late charge by the Vikettes in the third for a 25-20 win and the match.
Junior Calia Clubb led the Creek Girls’ attack with a team-high 15 kills, freshman Kenadi Wood made 23 assists, and senior Emily Sly had the team’s only solo block. Lauren Riggle, a senior, put up a trio of ace serves in the contest as well.

Bolts claim Titan Trophy with last-second win over rival Little Hawks

TD by Liberty’s Tye Hughes seals 28-24 win over City High

IOWA CITY– A game that started out oh-so-wrong ended oh-so-right in nail-biter fashion Friday, Oct. 9, for the Liberty High Lightning as they closed out the regular season with a trip to rival Iowa City-City High for “The Clash of the Titans.”
The Bolts won the contest 28-24 on a quarterback keeper by sophomore Tye Hughes with 5.6 seconds left in the ballgame. The win earned Liberty bragging rights over their rival, and possession for at least one year, of a brand new “Titan Trophy” specially crafted for the two schools.

Successful Solon Centennial Lions Shopping Days

SOLON¬– Using funds from a Lions Clubs International Emergency Relief Grant, the Solon Centennial Lions Club partnered with Sam’s Main Street Market to distribute $7,000 worth of perishable groceries to the Solon Community.
