River Queens end the Creek Girls’ season

Clinton upsets ranked CCA 3-1 in regional semifinal volleyball

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball season ended Tuesday, Oct. 29, as the Clinton River Queens pulled off a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) upset in a Class 4A regional semifinal match at CCA.
The Clippers entered the contest after a first-round bye with a 23-14 record, and a No.14 ranking in Class 4A from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU). Clinton, on the other hand, was unranked with a 12-22 record.

Liberty’s Keeney 2nd at state XC

Keeney, Logan and Mac represent the Lightning in Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE– Liberty High’s Ashlyn Keeney took the runner-up spot in the Class 4A Girls State Cross Country Meet Saturday, Nov. 2, in Fort Dodge. The speedy sophomore finished the course in 17:44.1, behind Champion Camille Jackson, of Ames, who won in 17:23.9. Keeney’s Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) rival, Micah Poellet, from Linn-Mar, was fourth in 18:18.9. Keeney was 72nd last year as a freshman in 20:22.8. She won this year’s MVC Super Meet with a 47-second lead over second-place Poellet, and aced her out a week later in the Valley Division Meet.

Liberty falls 14-7 to unbeaten Spartans in 3A football playoff

SOLON– Friday, Nov. 1, was bittersweet for Liberty High School as the Lightning celebrated the first playoff appearance for the varsity football team, and bid farewell to the “Original,” or “O-Bolts,” the seniors who have worn Liberty’s black, purple and silver for four years on the gridiron.
The Bolts faced the undefeated Solon Spartans in a Class 3A first round playoff game in Solon, and fell 14-7. The Spartans did all of their damage in the first half with a touchdown on their first possession, and the second just inside the second quarter.

Bolts sweep the Muskies in regional semifinal volleyball

Liberty’s 3-0 win over Muscatine sends Lightning to regional final

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity volleyball team moved a step closer to the state tournament with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-13) sweep of the Muscatine Muskies Tuesday, Oct. 29, at home, in a Class 5A regional semifinal match.
The Lightning earned a first-round bye with a 32-2 record and were ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Muskies were unranked and brought a 6-17 record into the contest.

Creek Boys 2nd in 3A at State Meet

O’Connor cracks the top-10 with 9th place

FORT DODGE¬– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country team picked up its second consecutive state runner-up trophy Saturday, Nov. 2, at the 2019 Class 3A State Meet in Fort Dodge. The Clippers, ranked No. 1 in the state for several weeks, lost to Dallas Center-Grimes by one point, 110-109, for second place.
Nick O’Connor, a senior, led the Creek Boys with a ninth-place finish in 16:29.5. Brandon Barker, a junior, was in the top-15 with an 11th-place finish in 16:30.7.
The Clippers were runners-up last year, for the first time in the history of the program.

Hinman in top tier at 3a state cross country

Solon sophomore finishes 35th at Ft. Dodge

FORT DODGE– Turning on the jets with less than a half-mile to go, Solon sophomore Gabe Hinman threaded his way through the pack. He picked up some valuable real estate at the Kennedy Park Golf (and cross country) course, Saturday, finishing 35th at the Class 3A state cross country meet.
“Gabe had a great meet,” applauded head coach Emy Williams. “He ran most of the race in 43rd place. In the last 400 meters he caught a lot of runners and ended up 35th. His experience from the year before (when he finished 46th as a freshman) helped, too.

Solon girls 7th at state XC

Now, it’s reload for 2020!

FORT DODGE– With a brisk midday wind, and temperature struggling to hit 40 degrees, Solon’s girls capped their cross country season on a high note. Basically matching their final ranking in the polls (which ranged from 12th to sixth through the second half of the season), the Lady Spartans finished seventh of the 15 regional qualifying teams on the turf Nov. 2, for the Class 3A state meet at Kennedy Park Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Solon escapes Liberty, 14-7

Spartans advance to host Pella Friday

SOLON– The week’s pole barn proverb read, “No chance for Lightning,” on Friday, Nov. 1.
Although cold winds blew and rain fell for most of the game at Spartan Stadium, the dour weather was not enough to turn away a large crowd eager to see the Spartans’ 14-7 triumph over the Liberty Lightning in their first Class 3A playoff appearance.

“Dirty Work at the Crossroads” takes the stage at CCA High School this weekend

TIFFIN– Murder, mayhem and other nefarious events will take center stage at Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Performing Arts Center in Tiffin this weekend as the High School’s drama department presents Dirty Work at the Crossroads, or Tempted, Tried and True, a Gay Nineties melodrama in three acts written by Bill Johnson.

Jack-O-Lanterns put the Ranshaw House in a Halloween spotlight

NORTH LIBERTY– Inspiration can come in many forms. For Jillian Miller, the community engagement coordinator for the City of North Liberty, a photo on a website inspired her to spearhead a new community activity. The result was a display of pumpkins carved by residents, on display outside the historic Ranshaw House.
